Series 1 and 2 of record group RG 97-7 consist of two sets of records of the Michigan Department of Public Health. The first set of records are administrative records (1873-1995, predominant dates 1925-1990). Includes annual reports of the Department and information on public health organizations and conferences. Also contains records of the Employee Services and Recreation Association (1988-1994); various histories of the Department; and Department newsletters (1947-1991). The work of Dr. Reuben Kahn is documented for the years 1923-1955. Dr. Kahn was the head of bacteriologist at the University of Michigan and a state immunization officer. The second set of records are subject files (ca. 1907-1992, predominant dates 1920-1980). Includes records from the Education, Laboratories, Local Health, and Nursing divisions. Also includes reports and studies produced by the Department of Public Health. Topics covered: general history of the Department, public health education, community health initiatives, the PBB disaster, communicable diseases, vaccinations, home health care, and nursing homes.

The State Board of Health was established by Public Act 81 of 1873. The Board was dissolved in 1919 by Public Act 146 which vested powers and duties of the Board in the State Commissioner of Health, supported by the State Health Advisory Council.
